Summer Wellness Strategies
With the summer heat extending much longer than the summer season, it is essential to keep cool and hydrated! Here are some strategies on how to stay healthy and active while fighting the Arizona heat.
- Drink plenty of water. Several factors determine the amount of water the body needs. These factors include the amount of physical activity, environment, pregnancy, and the health of the individual. Studies have shown that on average men need 3.7 liters and women need 2.7 liters of water a day. Another way to stay hydrated is to limit drinks that are going to cause dehydration, such as, caffeine, sugary drinks, and alcohol.
- Stay active. Being active outside is excellent during the summer! However, it is better to participate in nature walks/runs or other outdoor activities during the cooler times of the day. Or, if you are a desert dweller, a trip to cooler climates can be an exciting family adventure.
- Wear Sunscreen-Reapply. Reapply. Reapply! Wearing sunscreen is one of the easiest preventative measures that a person can take to lower their risk of disease. Simply being aware of the UV index can help cultivate the need to wear sunscreen which can be checked on any weather website or app.
- Covered and Cool. Wear light-colored clothing, thin layers, and a hat to help protect skin from both the sun and heat.
- Lastly, be aware of heat warnings within the area, as well as heat-related illnesses. Some of the illnesses associated with over-heating are heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Some signs and symptoms of these illnesses include headaches, nausea, dizziness, weakness, cramps, and heavy sweating.
