What is the number one most used drug in the world? The drug that is used by 90% of people every day in many different forms? Whether it is found in coffee, tea, soda, or energy drinks, caffeine is a natural stimulant of the central nervous system. This stimulant causes mental alertness, shorter reaction time, and improved short-term memory.   

Caffeine works to block the effects of neurotransmitters, called adenosine. This neurotransmitter causes the tired feeling. Therefore, making us feel energized and ready for the day! So what is so bad about caffeine?  

Studies have shown that it is safe for a healthy adult to drink up to 400 mg of caffeine. Roughly equal to 4 cups of coffee per day. It is important to know how much caffeine is in your favorite morning beverages because consuming more than 400 mg can cause sleep deprivation, headache, irritability, shakiness, upset stomach, increase heart rate and blood pressure.

  • Espresso: 240–720 mg.
  • Coffee: 102–200 mg.
  • Energy drinks: 50–160 mg.
  • Tea: 40–120 mg.
  • Soft drinks: 20–40 mg
